   Volume Three

Surf'n Bongos - Seeking to cash in on two crazes at once, the folks at Sutton records hit on these scrawny guys, neither of whom look like they've ever been outside, much less gone surfing.  But they got the guitar sound right, and the added bongos actually make for a fun, even danceable album.

Choice cuts: Bongo Surf, Church Key, Failsafe

Something For The Girls - Yes, the "girls", a brunette, a redhead and a blonde, all seem to want Dick (Contino), don't they?  And no wonder, what with him winning the Horace Heidt Radio Show talent competition with his flying fingers on "Lady of Spain".  Then, from the liner notes, we get the bad news - "Never again will you find so exciting an album."

Choice cuts: The One Finger Melody, Bewitched

Music For Faith And Inner Calm - Like the other dozen releases from the Melachrino Strings' "Moods In Music" series, this LP features a sappy, gushy, and skranky string orchestra.  But this one includes some quasi-religious poetry on the back cover to help you think more ponderous thoughts as you smoke your pipe and stare at that street light.

Choice cuts: Whispering Hope, Bless This House

Time For Listening - What a great 1950's album cover!  You got your "Moderne" furniture and vase, your boomerang ash tray, your throw pillows, and your handsome young couple relaxing on the floor with nothing but each other and their Hi-Fidelity music system.  Ah, bliss!  Too bad it's really just another harmonica record.

Choice cuts: Hernando's Hideaway, Somersault, Plymouth Sound

On The Rocks - A classic cheescake cover for the martini-slurpin' generation, this LP came out in early 1960, the same year that gave us President Kennedy, Hitchcock's "Psycho", the Twist, and the felt-tipped pen.  The music?  Brash, modern, and sophisticated, like our chick on the rocks.

Choice cuts: Almost Like Being In Love, On The Rocks, Jersey Bounce

Ongetrouwd Man Kamer - That's Dutch for "Bachelor's Apartment", complete with soft lights, a sofa, some mood music, cigarettes, and a "lady friend".  Sorry, honey - there's still too much light in here.

Choice cuts: (none; it's all bland and real scratchy)

Let's Dance - Sure, the crazed dancing lady cutouts are what first drew me to this album, but this LP also features the whistling artistry of Elmo Tanner!  YES!  Whistling records RULE!

Choice cuts: The Glow Worm, My Sin, The Trouble With Harry

The Nutcracker Suite - Look, it's those irresistably cute little dancing mushroom things from Fantasia!  But beware - the back cover features the stupid "hippos in tutus" from the same movie.

Choice cuts: It's the Nutcracker, OK?

The Cool Scene - Here it is, the record cover that started it all, found at a book sale at the Elyria, Ohio library.  Subtitled "Twelve New Ways To Fly", what looks suspiciously like an R.J. Reynolds promo album actually contains some of the hippest beat generation music of 1959: Jerry Mulligan, Marty Paich, Chico Hamilton, The Smart Set.  Dig it.

Choice cuts: Potsville USA, I Love Paris, The D.A.'s Man, Manteca

Indian Love Call - See if you recognize the lovely and talented Carol Lynley on the cover there, from (way) before her Poseidon Adventure.  Collecting "celebrity" covers can be fun - try it yourself!

Choice cuts: Donkee Serenade
